Victor J. Banis came from a generation earlier than myself and has a more pulp style of writing direct from those bad hair days of the 1960’s. It may be camp but it's the real deal with good old Victor my friend. I pay him the same respects I would give a Zane Grey (A well known western pulp writer) for evolving the type of gay erotic stories you read these days. Since his light hearted campy gay pulp novels were some of the first books you could buy way back in the bad old days when they sent folks to prison for writing about gay men and women.

Now, I myself don’t go quite that far back but I admit I was reading Victor’s books along with Gordon Merrick and Patricia Nell Warren when I was in high school searching for gay books at the local library. I was surprised to see this new book was available and I mistakenly thought maybe it was one of the older titles they had started re-publishing but to my surprise this was actually written fairly recently.

This story is more along the lines of say your typical western pot boiler like "Gunsmoke" or "Big Valley" with the whole serialized Western feel. It’s got more of the rough and tumble, stoic type cowboys and chuck wagons and riding the range with less deep meaning and emotional soap opera going on more sweat and cussing and flying fists than anything else. Which is always a fun way to approach the whole made up genre of the western as we know it (Read Chris Packard - Queer Cowboys for more on all that) I do not think cowboys saw a lot of soap or opera or spent much time pouting over their love lives for that matter.

So Buck is the young whipper snapper hot after some older ranch boss ass in this story and he makes his lewd highly suggestive intentions pretty dang clear to the old cowboy early on. The constant remarks and innuendos do not let up and more than one scene has them playing verbal tennis with each other over when and where Les will finally give in and give Buck the ride he is gunning for. I can see that this might get a bit tiresome for some readers but that constant cowboy banter is the whole point.

Longhorns ends up being cute and all but not too overly "romantic" for a gay romance about manly men doing manly things and despite lacking some deeper meaning like Brokeback Mountain was going for I do think being a cheesy Western about cowboys and such, well it all just works.

Great story, goo narration
This is my 3rd book from this amazingly prolific writer and each story is distinct and equally enjoyable in its own right. First is "Gay Haunt" a fun erotic romp, them the intriguing "Kenny's Back" and now his latest on cowboys in love.
I finished Longhorns in one sitting. His prose is most engaging. It is just so easy to immerse in the writer's cattle herding and ranching world, with its tough, rugged yet soft hearted cowboys. The characters of Les, Buck and Red are most appealing. Les is your pure alpha and stubborn cowboy. Buck is the endearing half breed who manages to win even the toughest cowboy's heart but by no means a sissy. Red is Les' quietly wise and solid right hand man who loves both men in his own special way.
From the time they meet, Buck is all out to get into Les' pants which is one fun and delighful read as other cowboys root for him to do just that. What I like about this novel is the close comradeship among the cowboys and their readiness in accepting that guys "doing it" with each other is just part of being a cowboy.
The plot is convincing and one enjoyable and smooth ride. There is never a dull moment. Les and Buck dancing around each other, Buck seducing and finally getting his man are just pure gold. I hope Mr Banis has more gay romance to offer us in the near horizon. Very glad to have found this writer's works.
This is the first erotic literature that kept me for looking for the "hot parts". The story is well told, bringing to life the "life of a ranch hand". Buck breezes into Les's life and won't let go. You can't help but root for Buck, as he tries to convince Les to give him a try. Les however is not ready to make nice, so Buck finds comfort with Red, a good friend of Les's. There's a bit of jealousy, followed by the acceptance that you can want something different. Les has the biggest "arc" in the story, but in the end both come to realize that what they want is more than just a roll in the hay with Les. The ending is surprising, all three learning their place in each other's life.
Great book endearing, exciting, fun characters, teasing, flirting, roping and riding not only horses but also guys, hot and steamy sex scenes, watching a major character struggle with his own sexuality and his view of who he is and what he wants. Buck is a doll of a character. Any gay guy worth his salt would want Buck, not only for his beauty and sexuality but also for his cocky, happy, fun-loving, in your face attitude and love of life. Les is a big hunk of cowboy who doesn't know what hit him when the tornado named Buck came into his life. Then there is Red, the other member of the triumvirate of sexy cowboys in this book; Red is solid, competent, empathic, understanding and sensible. He's going to be the cement that will enable the three cowboys to create a long term triumvirate after the events of this book. Grab it, read it, love the characters, love the way Banis slowly stirred his kettle and brewed up a fine stew in this lovely gem of a book.
